Don't bother sending thank you letters, they do absolutely nothing. A hiring decision is never based on whether or not a thank you letter was sent. If they want you, they want you; if they don't, they don't.
I disagree completely! I have always sent thank you notes following an interview, and I have personally been told that I was the chosen candidate BECAUSE I took the time to send a thank you note. It is ALSO important to be "one up" so to speak from the other candidates. If it is a close decision, and you send a thank you note, and the other candidate does not, then you are the one that will be selected. So in the majority of cases, it may very well come down to the thank you note. Send that thank you note!

I had an interview at a potential employer last Wednesday, did the first interview and then she had me do the second interview with the department I would potentially be hired for right on the spot. I thought both interviews went very well. During the second interview they said they would get back to me on Friday. It's now Monday and I am watching my phone! What should I do? Should I call looking for the HR manager who I interviewed with first to follow up? How long should I wait?

Job Interviews Forum - HR manager followed up with me.. Kind of strange?: Sorry I posted this in the wrong section...
Sorry I posted this in the wrong section before:)
Hi everyone so I am a bit confused. I had a phone interview on Wednesday last week with a company and they wanted me to come in the next day for an in person interview, but I couldn't so we settled for Friday. I met with 5 people during the interview and afterwards I sent my thank you emails, shortly after sending them I got two responses saying what a pleasure it was to meet me and that they would be in touch shortly. So today, I get an email from the hiring manager (who I only did the phone interview with) wanting to set up a 10 minute call with me - I was nervous and exciting thinking maybe I would get an offer... Wrong... The hiring manager called me to ask how the interview went... Weird.. Not only did he ask how the interview went but he told me how everyone had great things to say about me and I really knew my stuff. He told me he wanted to keep me in the loop and would continue to be in touch to 'chit chat' during the process. (Weird right?) He stated he was going to be completely transparent and that they are still finishing up interviewing other candidates... And that I would have a final decision on Thursday or Friday. He also asked if I was actively interviewing for other positions (which I am kind of doing but I have a full time job). I've never had a hiring manager call to see how the 'interview went' (if that was what he was actually do)... Is this common? I am kind of taken back by this because normally if I don't get a job they go dark and just never follow up.. But they went out of their way to contact me to tell me that? I am just going to assume I didn't get the job, but I found this very very strange lol. Any input other than keep looking? Lol

Job Interviews Forum - Made Mistake: Accepted Verbal Job Offer (Nothing Written) and Gave 2 Weeks Notice at Current Job: I had a strong interview for a position ...
I had a strong interview for a position I really want about 15 days ago. Hours after my interview, I was asked for my reference list. 10 days later, I received a voicemail from the hiring manager saying "we would like to offer you the job." I called back an hour later. Over the phone, they said they could meet my minimum salary requirement and that HR would send me an official offer letter, but did not know how long this would take. In my excitement and ignorance, I promptly put in my 2 weeks notice at my current job. Now I realize that this verbal offer shouldn't have been enough for me to leave my current job just yet. My question is, how common is it for a verbal job offer of this nature to fall through? Also, how bad a position did I just put myself in?

Job Interviews Forum - Do not trust job offers from "adp company" from a Ahu Yilidimarz: This person completely tricked me! I wis...
This person completely tricked me! I wish I had known what I know now before I ever got involved with them. Everything seems legit. They sent me an email saying they found my resume on indeed and wanted to offer me a job as a "cashier/ dispatch agent". My first clue should have been that it sounded too good to be true. Being a full-time college student, working from home and receiving $500 a week, which they were offering, seemed great. They had a link to the real ADP's website and posed as one of their vice presidents. This person convinced me to cash a check that turned out to be fraudulent and now I'm not even sure what is going to happen to me financially. This entire thing is embarrassing, I can't believe I fell for this scam. This person is so relentless that even when I confronted them about the fake check they still tried to get me to send them money. The check was a cashier's check with the company's name on it so I thought it was legit. Please don't be like me and fall for this scam.

Job Interviews Forum - No official offer, asking start date, AND I received promotion. Help!: I recently was given a tentative job off...
I recently was given a tentative job offer for a position that I had interviewed for. I have some questions about the job, and I'd like to talk about negotiating a salary, but I haven't been given an official offer. BUT, they're asking for a tentative start date. I've made it clear that I have some things I'd like to discuss for accepting an official offer. It seems that the folks that have hired me are pulling the trigger too soon and ignoring my concerns. What should I say?
Also, I was given a promotion with my current company while interviewing. Do I bring that up during the negotiations, or do I keep it to myself? The new company going to have to increase the salary if they want to hire me. I've never been in this position before, and I don't know how to properly word my request for a higher salary and also inform them that "Hey, I also got a promotion, so things have changed a bit."
Any advice is helpful. Thank you kindly!

It's been about a week since that email. Do I assume that I am out of the running?

Job Interviews Forum - Deciphering double-talk in a failed job interview: So I've been aggressively looking for wo...
So I've been aggressively looking for work for about two months. I've been fortunate in that I have been getting interviews for positions in sectors that I have not worked in before. Here are the most common things that they say or do that are indicative that I didn't get the job.
1. "We are still interviewing other people."
Translation: "We will keep you as a possibility unless we find someone better."
2. "I will let you know soon but I will be out of the office next week."
Translation: "I don't have the decency to tell you that I am taking a pass so please don't call me about an update."
3. "We will make a choice in the next few weeks."
Translation: "I don't have the decency to tell you that I'm taking a pass, but we know you are not going to pass up other opportunities. Hopefully you will find something during that time so we don't have to look like the bad guys."
4. "I can be a very demanding boss. The environment can be intense. There is little downtime."
Translation: "I don't have the decency to tell you that I am taking a pass, so I am trying to scare you from wanting the job."
5. The interview is kept short >20 minutes.
Translation: "I am not wasting anymore of my time with you."
6. They don't ask you if you have any questions at the end.
Translation: "I am not wasting anymore of my time with you."
7. "You sound great. Your experience is good. I really liked your answer." or other platitudinous statements.
Translation: "Since I am not picking you, I am tuning you out."
Feel free to add!

Job Interviews Forum - Misconceptions about references: 1. References cannot say anything bad ab...
1. References cannot say anything bad about you or you can sue them.
Not true. As long as they don't lie, they are in the clear. For example, they can say that they would honestly not rehire you. Also, I have never heard of a prospective employer going back to a prospective employee and saying they were passing because the former employer said bad things about them.
2. Using fake references is unethical.
A lot of companies have a no-reference policy which screws the prospective employee. What do you if you need a work reference but no one at your job is willing to break policy for you? I believe anyone who says that they would not fake a reference and would rather lose a lucrative job is lying.
3. Employers check work history.
In my experience, they do this via references. I have never heard of a company accessing some kind of work history database as verification. I know some exist but not every employer shares those records (i.e. Work Number). Places like the Work Number usually has more retail/fast food places as oppose to professional service jobs.
Anymore?

Job Interviews Forum - Kmart Hiring Process and Background check: [QUOTE who="rayray in Detroit, Michigan"...
Well it's been 3 weeks about since and i called them about a week ago the HR lady said she recieved a email that morning saying they want the police arrest records now mind u thats something practically impossible to get, i dont know maybe i can get them its been wow 20 and 25 years ago. So my way of thinking is she stated she recieved a email that morning well why not call me, why i had to call you, i just got the feeling they didnt want to hire me after they offered me the job, they act like i was trying to be the CEO . Im was mostly upset on how on the app they mention 7 years but them bamboozle me like that. They should of known all that before they offered me the job. So i had no contact for about a week so i guess i will just move on.
They only go back 7 years so if your convictions are 20-25 yrs old y in the world would u inform them, there is a 7 yr rule in ca unless your getting finger printed, no limitations on fingerprinting, i just did an interview with kmart offered the job my conviction is 13 yrs old i chose answer no, for no convictions and my background was fine nothing came up, my advice to u keep ur mouth closed

Job Interviews Forum - Why I have no problem being dishonest in a job search: I've been this way for years. I know now...
I've been this way for years. I know now the truth does not set you free. I have fibbed, and exaggerated skills, I have outright made up stuff in an interview to questions because I know making up some 'accomplishment' I had on my last job is not going to hurt me as long as I don't go overboard. (like say I saved the company 100,000 million dollars and was offered the CFO position on the spot. Nothing stupid like that.
Most job interviews and their questions are useless. You just want the job anyway you can get it.

Job Interviews Forum - I dropped out of grad school and I was one class short of graduating: I was working on my Master's in Public A...
I was working on my Master's in Public Administration through a reputation state college. All of my classmates were either entry level or managerial in the public sector. I got straight A's in the class and was seen as one of the smartest students in the class. I had one class left but I dropped out. Why?
1. All of my classmates are either entry level or managerial public sector employees. Out of the two years that I've been in grad school, I have only worked about eight months in the public sector.
2. Getting a job in the public sector is too difficult. For one FT entry-level job, there would be at least 400 people. 400 people, ONE job. I would usually make it to the final five and in my experience, having a Master's in the field doesn't mean jack if you don't have the experience. And these weren't highly technical jobs; these were rank-and-file admin gigs.
3. When I started grad school, I was working as a babysitter. Two years later and 40K in debt later, I am working as a dog walker. I'm so poor that I am on Medi-Cal. How sad is that?
4. People don't check to see if you have the education that you claim to have.
5. Job openings in the public sector field rarely happen. Maybe four or five FT positions a year.
6. I couldn't stand listening to my clASSmates whine and complain about their cushy $55K a year job every Thursday night when I haven't made more than 30K in any year and would kill to have their jobs.

Job Interviews Forum - Interview questions about overtime: As I understand it, if you are salaried ...
As I understand it, if you are salaried and need to work outside your normal hours then that is expected and you are not comped. I've been on interviews where the wages are hourly and they ask me about overtime. The impression that I get from them is that OT is a work reality but even at an hourly wage, you shouldn't expect to be paid for it. For example, I had an interview where the supervisor said she was looking for someone who doesn't bail at 5PM and wouldn't mind staying if last minute things came up. She asked me what I thought about that and I wanted to respond that I would have no issue if I were being paid OT but that is not what she wanted to hear from me. I feel like that those supervisors want someone who will work extra unpaid hours and requesting OT isn't what a team player would do. They would just stay. I know it's not about being a "team player" and more about getting as much work from someone as possible. Anyone dealt with that? the supervisors are salaried so they don't get OT and I suspect they want someone willing to stay being so they don't have to.
